An original oil seascape on stretched canvas titled Breaking Waves by well listed New York artist George Howell Gay (1858-1931). The painting illustrates rolling waves as they crest, the clouds above seemingly lit from above. Signed in the lower left corner, the painting is presented in a gold wooden frame.
George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes and seascapes along the shores of New England, his oil paintings are scarce. George Gay studied under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago, and he is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art Club, 1890 to 1900; and Boston Art Club, 1897.
Condition
The painting is in very good condition, the frame is a bit scuffed and scratched at edges.
