"Cries of London" Plate 9 and 12 Colored Engraving
Item Details
A group of two antique 1795 color engraving titled Cries of London, Plate 9 and 11 engraved by Italian printmaker Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 – 1810) after paintings by famed English portrait painter Francis Wheatley (1747 – 1801). This publication was intended to shine light upon the lives of English street venders, and those who had been dispossessed. One print depicts a young woman with basket on her head selling strawberries. Text below the image area reads as follows, “Strawberrys, Scarlet Strawberrys Fraises, fraises mes belles fraises.” The second print a young man with a gingerbread cart and several customers. The text below the image reads ‘Hot Spice Gingerbread, Smoking Hot! Do Croquet de Pain d’ Epices!’ Both prints are presented behind glass in a 20th century cherry wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.
