An oil painting on wood panel of St. Eloy, patron of farriers. This work depicts St. Eloy with a staff in his hand, in a cloud above two men attending to a horse against a sparse rural background. The words ‘Ex Voto. 1837’ are painted to the lower left corner, and there is a block of illegible script to the verso. This painting does not appear to be signed. The piece is presented in a carved blue frame with elaborately-painted gold tone detailing and a wire to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- fair; areas of crazing and light wear throughout painting; abrasions at frame edges; wears and stains to frame finish; header of frame is separating; entire piece is slightly bowed.
