19th Century Grand Tour Gouache Waterfront Scenes of Mt. Vesuvius

A pair of 19th century Grand Tour gouache paintings on paper of waterfront scenes with a smoking Mt. Vesuvius in the background. Included in these highly detailed works is a painting of a stone dock, with three ships visible to one side, being used as a promenade by a variety of couples. The accompanying piece depicts a foreground with a pair of men fishing from the rocks, fishing boats out to water before them, and a row of buildings visible just off to one side. A low line of mountains with a smoking volcano is visible in the background of both pieces. Both works are unsigned and presented under glass in wide wooden frames with wires for hanging and labels marked ‘Robin Interiors’ to the verso.
Condition
- wear to frame finish; minor chipping; both are dusty.
