Chinese Sancai Style Glazed Reticulated Vase
Item Details
A Chinese reticulated tianqiu ping globular vase glazed in vibrant sancai style glazes. The vase is in the traditional ‘celestial ball’ (天球瓶 tianqiu ping) or ‘globular’ vase with a narrow neck widening into a bulbous body. The whole vase is glazed in deep sage green, marigold yellow, and deep brown-aubergine sancai style glazes. A large taotie inspired monster mask dominates the body of the vessel against swirling stylized cloud motifs embellished with unusual reticulations. The underside of the vase displays an incised mark, reading ‘Bestowed during the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty’ (大清康熙年製, Da Qing Kangxi nian zhi), however, the vase was likely produced in the Republic period (1949-1912) or late Qing dynasty (1644-1911). 1938.0194
