Antique Chinese Carved Jadeite Lock-Shaped Medallion

Item Details

An early 20th century Chinese carved jadeite lock-shaped medallion. The auspicious phrase ‘May you become the First Scholar’ (狀元及第 zhuangyuan jidi) is inscribed on both faces of the piece. The lock-shaped medallion, common gifts for young men in wealthy families, is further embellished with incised scrolls and stylized dragon motifs. Te stone is of a watery and translucent quality, with a russet fissure through one side, traces of emerald throughout. Accession number was 1938.0050.
