Signed Hand-Knotted Bezalel Pictorial Hebrew Rug with Inscription
Item Details
A signed, hand-knotted pictorial Hebrew Bezalel School accent rug with inscription, made by the Marvadiah Workshop, circa 1920. This accent rug features imagery of a path leading to an open temple door with trees and hills to the distance, under a night sky with a large full moon. The rug has a palette of deep saturated red, cream, taupe, black and indigo. It has a panel to the top end with a floral and foliate pattern, and the image in the field is surrounded by a repeating pattern of reciprocal triangle elements. It has triple overcast edges and a plaited, soft and fine wool fringe to each end. It is not labeled. The piece has text from Jeremiah 31:15 woven beneath the pictorial reading קול ברמה נשמע רחל מבכה על בניה as well as קבר רחל or Rachel’s Tomb, the place Jerusalem and the name of the shop מרבדיה at lower right.
