Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo of Mary and Jesus

An elaborate Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board of Mary holding the infant Jesus, late 18th to early 19th century The image shows Mary in an ornate floral dress and blue robe with embroidered flowers holding the infant in her left hand. She is standing on a raised dias in the form of a crescent moon and there are two women kneeling in front of her. The image is framed with red drapes. The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board with a leather strap for hanging. 1938.unknown

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.

Condition

- darkened overall.
- loss of paint, particularly on top edge.
- cracks through the center of the board, starting at both top and bottom.
