Fine Spanish Colonial Retablo of San Antonio di Padua

An early to mid 19th century Spanish Colonial retablo on board of San Antonio di Padua (Saint Anthony of Padua, 1195-1231), depicted, as is traditional, holding the Ninõ, Infant Jesus. The image shows the saint, tonsured, in a habit holding the Infant in his right hand and flowers in his left. There is a table with a vase of flowers in the left background and four trees on the right. The image is framed with red and black line borders. Text along the base reads ‘San Antonio di Padua.’ The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board. The board has an arch carved into the top above the image. 1938.0545
Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
Condition
- darkened overall.
- loss of paint, particularly on the arch above the image.
- some losses to paint on figures.
