A tempera painting and pastel drawing on paper by listed American artist Edgar Hatten (1929-1990), executed in April 1989. The work depicts a geometric color field expression of pastel blocks surrounded by a gray tempera paint border. Signed to the verso of the paper and notations in graphite to the verso of the mat reads ‘Edgar Hatten signed verso/ For Paul Hendrix/ Apr 1989.’ Presented under an off-white mat, covered in acetate.
Hatten is known for painting abstract still-lifes and landscapes, integrating mood, concept, visual elements, and drama. He was born in Wyoming and lived most of his life in Los Angeles. He was a teacher at Swinbourne College in Australia, and in California at East Los Angeles College and Citrus College.
