John Ellsworth Weis Oil Painting on Canvas "Lobster Fishing"
Item Details
An original oil painting on canvas titled Lobster Fishing by listed artist John Ellsworth Weis (1892-1962). In this piece, docked ships fill the upper portion of the composition, and another vessel rolls into the bay in the distance, sailing between green hills. On land, two figures sit by a house with a pair of seagulls flying low overhead. Signed in paint to the lower right, this work is presented in a beveled, gold tone frame with hanging wire present to the verso.
Weis began taking evening classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati at the age of fourteen and studied under artists Frank Duveneck and Lewis Henry Meakin. At the age of twenty-two, The Academy offered Weis a permanent position on the staff, which he held for thirty-eight years.
