18th/19th Century Spanish Colonial Retablo of San Jose y Jesus

A Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board, late 18th or early 19th century, of the Saint Joseph holding the infant Jesus. The image shows Joseph wearing a brown mantle with a navy blue robe, holding the infant in his right hand and a staff with a flower end in his left. He is flanked by two trees in the background. The image is framed with ornate drapes and floor. The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board. 1938.0553

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
