A sweet, naif, early 19th century Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board of Mary holding the infant Jesus, the Nuestra Señora del Refugio de Pecadores (Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners). The image shows Mary a red dress and light robe holding the infant in her left arm and a bouquet of red flowers in her right. The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board. There are remnants of a brad from mounting. 1938.0551
Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
