Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo of Saint Jerome

A fine and naive Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board of San Geronimo (Saint Jerome, 342-420), early 19th century. The image shows Jerome holding a cross in both hands. He appears to be unclad and kneeling, draped in a red robe. There is a trumpet sounding in the upper right corner of the image and the face of a lion in the lower left . The image is bordered with red and black stripes. The rustic painting is executed in black, red and yellow on a board.

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.

Condition

- wear consistent with age.
- darkened overall. some cracks to paint from board expansion
