Excellent Retablo of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores

Item Details

An excellent late 18th to early 19th Century Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board, a fine depiction of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows). The image shows the Mary in a white dress and blue robe, a sword piercing her heart beneath clasped hands. She is wearing a crown and is surrounded by red drapes. This retablo has a carved floral aureole decoration above the image. The rustic painting is executed in black, red, blue and yellow on a rough hewn board.

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
