Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo of a Sainted Queen
Item Details
A Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine board of a sainted Queen, likely Isabel de Portugal (Elizabeth of Portugal, 1271-1336), late 18th to early 19th century. The image depicts the subject in a red embroidered gown and blue robes, wearing a crown, and holding a cross in her right hand and a crescent moon scepter in her left. She is surrounded by red and blue drapes on the sides. The rustic painting is executed in black, red, blue, green and yellow on a rough hewn board.
Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
Condition
- wear consistent with age.
- darkened overall but generally clear and bright.
