Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo of San Ignacio de Loyola

A late 18th to early 19th Century Spanish Colonial retablo image on pine of San Ignacio de Loyola (Saint Ignatius of Loyola, 1491-1556). The image shows the saint in a black, wearing a biretta, holding a cross in his right hand and his mace in his left. He is standing against a light yellow background with red drapes on the borders The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board. 1938.0531

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.

Condition

darkened overall, some splitting to the board and losses to paint, particularly along the lower edge and lower right corner.
