Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo of le Virgen Maria

An early 19th Century Spanish Colonial retablo image on board of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The image shows Mary in a red dress and faint blue robe holding a cross in her folded hands. Her head is framed with a halo and she is surrounded by bushes or trees in the background. The image is bordered with a black stripe with wavy decorations and sunbursts in the upper corners. The rustic painting is executed in black, red blue and yellow on a rough hewn board. 1938.0535
Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.
Condition
darkened overall with loss of paint in many places including the face. some cracking to board.
