18th-19th Century Spanish Colonial Retablo of Arcángel Miguel

A late 18th to early 19th century Spanish Colonial retablo on pine depicting what appears to be the Archangel Michael. The image shows the being in a red robe with white stripes holding a sword in his left hand with his right hand holding a scale. The background is indistinct. The rustic painting is executed in black, red and yellow on a rough hewn board. 1938.0536

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century around Santa Fe, New Mexico, and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938.
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections.

Condition

darkened overall with loss of paint in many places including the face. some splitting and loss to board
