Semi-Antique Handwoven Pictorial Caucasian Tribal Runner

Item Details

A semi-antique handwoven pictorial tribal runner from the Caucasus, possibly Armenia. This earth-tone flatweave wool rug features a lively design that incorporates images of domestic animals in each of seven medallions and throughout the field. Notably, the field includes several Roman alphabet letters as well as the number ‘28’. It begins with a vertical row of medallions, five of which are grounded in black, and two in terracotta over a cream-colored field. The palette is cream, black, terracotta, mustard, and shades brown. Animals represented include a variety of birds, goats, cats, dogs, rams, and butterflies; most are woven in earth tones, though some are done in pinks, orange, or blues. Scattered amid the animals are letters and numbers, as well as ram’s horn symbols, eyes, geometric florets, eight-pointed stars, a potted flowering plant, and other symbolic motifs. Framing the field are compound geometric borders in the colors of the field. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end with undyed brown wool warp fringe that may include goat hair. The rug is unlabeled.
