Swan & Company Melodeon Travel Pump Organ

A great Swan & Co Melodeon traveling pump organ in original wooden case. Organ features an elaborate wood and metal frame base, which collapses to fit in trunk, with generous lyre detail to sides. Melodeon top comes off and rests on the wood frame beneath. Marked to ‘Swan & Co., Cherry Valley, N.Y. May 7, 1850’. Traveling case has a rough wood construction and melodeon has a nice glossy finish to wood. Melodeons are small reed organs with a five to six octave keyboard. At the turn of the 20th century, melodeon sales surpassed piano sales, due to portability.
Condition
Some wear to piece consistent with age and use. Some cracks to wood including scratches and scuffs to wood. Has not been tested. Wood split in one of the legs.
