Husidio John Tempest Oil on Canvas "El Trovatore" After Giorgio de Chirico
Item Details
An oil painting on canvas titled Il Trovatore by listed American artist Husidio John Tempest (b. 1953), created in 2017. This work is based off a series of paintings by Italian Surrealist Giorgio de Chirico, the first of which was completed in 1917, and reworked by de Chirico throughout the 1960s. The painting features a mannequin dressed in armor, bound to a metal structure in a desolate landscape with two stark geometric architectural forms in the background. The artist has signed the work ‘G. de Chirico’ to the lower right, but Tempest’s signature is present to the verso. Additional handwriting to the verso reads ‘In Omaggio a de Chirico’.
Tempest comes from a long line of notable and successful artists, stemming from Antonio Tempesta, circa 1600, in Florence, Italy. His father Gerard Tempest (1918-2009) was a student of famed Italian Surrealist Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978). At the Art Students League, Tempest studied under artists John Howard Sanden (b. 1935) and Nelson Shanks (1937-2015). He maintained a close association with de Chirico and worked in his studio in Rome.
