Hand-Knotted Afghan War Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Afghan war rug. Made of wool with the possible inclusion of goat hair, this brown, red, camel, and turquoise rug depicts a helicopter, rocket launcher, tank, and large Kalashnikov rifle over a camel-colored field that begins with two birds at the top. Also depicted are missiles and other war-themed images, amid multicolored eight-point stars. Pictorial elements are detailed and crisp. The weaver includes English-language wording at the top and bottom of the rug: at one end are the words ‘Afghan Refuge Carpts’; at the other, ‘Ghan Rfeuges Carpets,’ possibly indicating the rug was woven in Pakistan by an Afghan refugee. A pair of borders feature geometric patterns that include raised, textured pile in coral and turquoise. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with kilim skirts and long, knotted cotton warp fringe. The rug is unmarked.
