Mid-Century Owl Sculpture by California Artist Lou Rankin
Item Details
A mid-century owl sculpture by California artist Lou Rankin. Created in a cement, the owl stands on a natural wood block with large glass eyes, metal legs and a hooked metal beak. The sculpture is signed to the bottom.
Lou Rankin originally trained as a cartoonist at the University of California, Berkeley before being sent to the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended UCLA where he took a sculpture class where he created birds made from nails. His work became well known and several sculptures were used to decorate the lobby during the premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller The Birds (film) in New York in 1963. In 1964, Rankin began using concrete to make the body of an owl which he could not do with nails. These were sold in art galleries, at Gump’s in San Francisco, and at his own gallery in the Tlaquepaque complex in Sedona, Arizona.
