John Ihle Artist's Proof Color Etching on Paper "Catacomb"

An artist’s proof color etching on paper titled Catacomb by American artist John Ihle (1925-2002), created in 1963. This abstract work features a row of arches in the lower half of the composition and sketchy figural shapes in the upper half against a gradated red and orange background. Various intricate delineations, hatch marks, and textures fill the composition. The work is dated and signed by hand in graphite to the lower right margin, titled to the lower center margin, and marked ‘A/P’ to the lower left margin. It is presented under white matting in remnants of a protective plastic sleeve; the work remains unframed.

Born in Chicago, John Ihle studied at Illinois Wesleyan University where he was a student of Charles White. He was employed at the Chicago Museum of Natural History as a botanical illustrator and later became known for his experimentation in printmaking. Ihle’s work has been exhibited by several institutions including the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

- tears, rips, scratches, residue, and stains throughout plastic sleeve; large spots of adhesive residue to lower left area of plastic sleeve; black binding on edges of plastic sleeve are detaching or lost; print needs adjusting under mat.
