John Ihle Limited Edition Aquatint Etching on Paper "Alphonsus"

A signed limited edition aquatint etching on paper titled Alphonsus by American artist John Ihle (1925-2002), dated circa 1961. This abstract work features circular craters and indiscernible forms filled with various textures, erratic splatters, and linear hatch marks. The gray-scale composition is bisected into an area with a black background and an area with a gray background. The print is signed by hand in graphite to the lower right margin; titled to the lower center margin, and numbered 4 out of an edition of 10 to the lower left margin. It is presented under white matting in a protective plastic sleeve; the work remains unframed.

Born in Chicago, John Ihle studied at Illinois Wesleyan University where he was a student of Charles White. He was employed at the Chicago Museum of Natural History as a botanical illustrator and later became known for his experimentation in printmaking. Ihle’s work has been exhibited by several institutions including the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

- tears, rips, scratches, residue, and stains throughout plastic sleeve; black binding on edges of plastic sleeve are detaching or lost; some faint stains and smudges throughout mat.
