A limited edition wood engraving on paper titled The Artist and the Seven Deadly Sins by Fritz Eichenberg (1901-1990). Depicted is an older man, possibly the artist, drawing on a piece of wood with carving tools at his side. Behind him are different personifications of the seven deadly sins. Numbered 4 out of an edition of 100. Signed by hand graphite to the lower right and titled to the lower left. The work is presented behind a white mat and remains unframed.
Fritz Eichenberg was born in Cologne, Germany and studied at the Municipal School of Applied Arts in Cologne and the Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipzig. He produced illustrations for publication until he fled Germany in 1933 due to the rise in National Socialism. Eichenberg and his family immigrated to New York where he worked for WPA’s Federal Arts Project. Some time later he served as the head of the art department at the University of Rhode Island, and created the printmaking studios there.
