Large Hand-Knotted Indian Agra Rug
Item Details
A large hand-knotted Indian Agra rug. This wool area rug is rendered in an abrashed palette of deep red, pale gold, salmon, and sapphire. It begins with a multi-lobed medallion in gold, with palmettes as star points. The medallion rests on a red field populated with palmettes and scrolling leaves, the field ending with sapphire spandrels. Framing the field are compound, resolved borders including a gold primary border that contains a variation of the cloudband pattern. Flanking the primary border are meandering floral guard strips and, finally, a medahil outer rail. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short kilim skirts and ivory cotton warp fringe. It is marked on the reverse.
