"Composition" Original Oil on Board by Arthur Helwig (1899-1976)

An original oil painting on board by notable Cincinnati artist Arthur Louis Helwig (1899-1976), titled Composition. The abstract painting depicts a composition of colorful arched shapes which seemingly float over a landscape of vertical brick red rectangles against a mottled green and blue background. The painting is signed in the lower right corner, mounted on a painted gray board then framed in a simple black composite frame, equipped to hang, with a gallery tag containing information about the piece attached to the verso.

Arthur Helwig was a notable artist and past president of the Cincinnati Art Club (1939 to 1941). Helwig was an active artist for over four decades and an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy, during which he exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and across the United States. Helwig studied under Theodore Dorl, Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkins. He worked in watercolor, oils, and numerous printing methods and was also a well known mural painter. His works can be found in The Cincinnati Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, The Philadelphia Museum and The Cleveland Art Museum as well as numerous private collections.
