A signed artist’s proof lithograph on paper titled Emplumada by well-listed Lithuanian-American artist Romas Viesulas (1918-1986), created in 1962. With a a muted palette of layered grays, browns, and yellows. this abstract work features an indiscernible round object in the lower center stabilizing the composition. A explosion of splatters fills the top half of the composition, adding spontaneity to the overall work. The print is signed and date by hand in graphite to the lower right; it is titled in the lower center and marked ’Artist’s Proof’ to the lower left. Presented under glass with off-white matting in a simple brown wood frame. A descriptive label from USICA is present to the verso.

Born in Latvia, Romas Viesulas studied in Latvia and Lithuania before immigrating to the U.S. in 1944. A few years later he returned to Europe to study at the École des Arts et Métiers in Freiburg and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. Viesulas is primarily known for his printmaking and his work can be found in several renowned art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
