A watercolor painting on paper titled Waterfall, attributed to American artist John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872).This delicately rendered piece is captured in shades green and blue, and places the viewer before the foaming waterfall of a woodland creek, the bank of which is flanked by trees and stones. Through the trees, a distant range of hills can be made out. This work is presented under glass in a wood frame with gold tone detailing with an off-white mat. Kensett was part of the Hudson River School and is known for his paintings and engravings of landscapes, and for his use of luminism – the depiction of atmosphere and light in landscapes.
Condition
- wear to frame; mat is crooked in frame; piece is no longer centered under mat; work includes notation of deaccessioned from The New Britain Museum of American Art on the verso, as well as a note that it was acquired at a sale of all-Kensett work.
