A handmade Aubusson wool area rug. This needlepoint rug features a classical rose-and-acanthus design in shades of gray, shades of pink, tan, and brown. It begins with a bouquet of roses and brown foliage framed in a round central medallion over a gray field. Above and below the medallion are complementary panels, which contain acanthus fronds and scrolls. Borders are subtly broken, the primary border consisting of alternating panels of light and dark gray, featuring roses and periwinkles, with a round floral cameo in each corner. Edges are serged, with a protective fabric panel sewed along the rug’s underside. The item is unmarked.
