Ornate Majolica Ewer

An ornate majolica ewer. This piece has applied putti figures throughout; at the top of the handle, at the front of the vessel, under the pouring lip, in a frieze around the body and at the stem.The vessel has a marine theme, with an ornate rim formed in the shape of a crashing wave, under which a putto rides a sea ‘horse.’ The extended handle features a putto at the crest, pouring water over the curve of the handle over a satyr. The frieze of putti around the basin are shown riding dolphins in relief, above a stem which is designed with mermaids appearing to support the body, and the entire piece is glazed and painted in various shades of blue, green and brown. There is a small ‘TS’ imprinted on the underside of the base.

Condition

- some light losses to paint, consistent with age.
