A hand-knotted Turkish Heriz area rug. This rectilinear wool rug is woven in a palette of madder red, indigo, pink, and ivory. It begins with a cross-shaped medallion seeded with a star, both of which are nestled inside of a large, indigo star medallion. These rest on a red field, which is populated with oak leaves, flowers, stars, and palmettes. Cornering the field are large spandrels over ivory with arrows, tree of life motifs, and other symbolic elements. The field is framed by compound, unresolved borders. These inlcude a primary border featuring a stylized herati pattern over indigo, flanked on either side by meandering tulip borders in camel. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short, ivory cotton warp fringe. It is unmarked.
