Hand-Knotted Turkish Heriz Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Turkish Heriz area rug. This semi-rectilinear wool rug is woven in a markedly abrashed palette of madder red, deep midnight blue, cream, and camel. It begins with an eight-pointed star medallion that contains two smaller medallions, all three featuring a single palmette in each lobe. The medallions rest on a red field, which is populated with oak leaves, vines, flowers, and palmettes as well as large, stylized pendants connected to the medallion at top and bottom. Ivory spandrels also contain these elements. Framing the field are compound, unresolved borders, including a primary border featuring a stylized herati pattern over midnight blue and a pair of meandering carnation guard borders over camel. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end of short, ivory wool warp fringe. The rug is unmarked.
