Handmade Aubusson-Style Area Rug

A handmade Aubusson-style area rug. This needlepoint wool rug features a shaded floral design in a palette of camel, cream, shades of brown, coral, and gray with blue highlights. It begins with a small rose of Sharon bouquet amid brown and green foliage over cream. The bouquet rests on a scalloped, round medallion, which is nestled inside of a larger medallion, resting on a larger one still, all with scrolling edges. These are enclosed within a cream colored field, which is filled with large-scale fruit, foliage, and grape vines, with a floral cameo at each corner. Borders are subtly broken, the primary outer border featuring a repeating pattern of small cartouche shapes over taupe. This item is unmarked.
Condition
- there is some stretching; unraveling at the ends; loose threads on the underside are characteristic of the needlepoint process.
