Hand-Knotted Persian Bijar Pictorial Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Bijar pictorial rug. This semi-curvilinear wool area rug begins with a large star medallion, which features an outer region populated with parrots, rabbits, and crested birds amid flowers and palmettes on a sapphire ground. Amid a universal palette of madder red, sapphire, cream, ivory, and camel, the medallion rests on a striated camel-and cream-colored field that features a tight diamond lattice pattern with tiny pink flowers. Cornering the field are spandrels in red, cream, and sapphire, populated with small flowers. The field is framed by four borders, including the primary border, which features a meandering floral pattern over red, and two daisy and calyx guard borders. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short ivory wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
