An antique engraving on paper titled Cantalupo and Bardella by Jacob Philipp Hackert (German, 1737-1807). This engraving depicts figures and animals in an Italian landscape scene. The piece is marked on the lower left ‘Point di Gosando por JP Heckert 1780’, marked underneath the image ‘Vue De Cantalupo et Bardella anc: Mandela, Prise du Cote de St. Cosimato, Me quoties reficit gelidus Digentia rivus. – Quem Mandela bibit rugosus frigore pagus, Hor: Ep: XVIII.Lib. I’ and marked on the lower right ‘Gravi a’ l’ eau forte por B.A Dunlier et termine por G. Eichler’. The work is unframed.
Jacob Hackert began his study with his father, Philipp Hackert and in 1755 studied with Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur at the Berlin Akademie. It was during that period he encountered and copied, the landscapes of Dutch artists and of Claude Lorrain.
