Vintage Watling Coin Operated Weight and Fortune Scale
Item Details
A vintage Watling coin operated weight and fortune scale. Made by the Chicago Watling Scale Company, this piece was commonly found in five-and-dime department stores throughout the country and operates on a penny coin. The top of scale contains a rolling scroll under glass with novel questions, such as: ‘How can I avoid trouble? What will my wife be like? Will I be happy in my home life?’ and more, flanked by height and weight charts for men and women. The scale frame is made of enameled metal with a beveled glass mirror front panel, marked by the Watling Scale Company of Chicago with a 1933 date. The scale is tested and the fortune function operates when a coin is inserted, the scale is not functioning. The front mirrored panel is in an unlocked position and swings open, key is not included.
