An etching on paper titled The Old Boat Works by well listed American actor and artist Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954). The print depicts an old boat house with three workers inside and a sailboat in the background. Signed in plate in the lower right of the recto and titled in the lower left. Above the title is the mark from the printing company B&B. The piece is presented under glass, housed in a gold painted frame.
Lionel Barrymore was born in Philadelphia in 1978 to a passionate family of actors. Although Barrymore wished to be a painter, he couldn’t help but follow in his family’s footsteps and become one of the most well-known actors of his time on stage, screen, and radio. He is most recognizable from his role as Mr. Potter in Frank Capra’s 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life. Barrymore was also a successful author, film director, and artist.
Condition
- good to fair; the paper shows discoloration throughout and significant water staining on the right side; frame has a few small dents and nicks in the upper left corner.
