A 19th-century oil painting on board portrait of a man, dated 1842. This piece depicts the portrait of a man rendered from a three-quarter perspective with a stoic expression and gazing directly at the viewer. The painting is unsigned by the artist. Presented without glass, housed in a wedged wood frame with a gilt fillet. To the verso, a faded graphite inscription reveals date and an illegible artist’s name. A manufacturer stamp from the British ‘Waring and Dimes’ craft’s supplies store is present to the board backing.
Condition
- Under U.V light this piece presents several areas of inpainting scattered throughout the composition; scratches and craquelure present throughout painting; wear, dents and minor abrasion to frame; remnants of removed paper backing.
