Claude Curry Bohm Oil Painting on Board Seascape

Item Details

An oil painting on board attributed to listed American artist Claude Curry Bohm (1894-1971). The piece depicts a wavy seascape in green and yellow tones with an unfinished quality to it. The work is unsigned but is stamped in the lower left ‘Estate of C. Curry Bohm.’ The later 20th-century board and estate mark may indicate that the piece was left unfinished in Bohm’s studio after he passed. The painting is presented without glass in an ornate gilt frame.

Claude was born in Nashville, TN on October 19, 1984. He had formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at the National Academy. His vibrancy and appreciation for life is expressed in his oil and watercolor paintings of landscapes and harbor scenes for which he is most well known. Claude was heavily influenced by his peer, Edward Joseph Finley Timmons (American, 1882 – 1960), whom he studied with in Chicago, as well as the many artists that were apart of the Brown County Art Gallery where Bohm first visited in 1920. He received the Chicago Municipal Art League Prize; The Gold Medal in the Chicago Palette and Chisel; the Frederick N. Vance Memorial Award from the Brown County Art Gallery; the Edward Rector Memorial from the Hoosier Salon; the Lawrence A. Downs Prize; the Tri Kappa Purchase Prize; Daughters of Indiana Award; and the Hoosier Salon Summer Landscape Prize. Today, his work can mainly be found in the Brown County Art Gallery.
