Mary Lyde Hicks Williams Original Oil on Canvas Portrait

An original oil on canvas portrait by noted North Carolina artist Mary Lyde Hicks Williams (1866-1959). Williams, born in Faison, North Carolina, came from a lineage rich in American history. After finishing junior college, Williams went on to study portrait painting. Many pieces of her art can be found in museums including the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Duke Library. This portrait is dated 1912 to the lower right and depicts a woman dressed in a high collared black dress. Her hair is pulled tightly in a bun and her color is accented by a cameo. The piece is signed M.L.H. Williams to the lower right. The painting rests in a carved gold tone gilt frame. A wire is affixed to the verso for hanging.
