A vintage, room-sized hand-knotted Kerman rug, circa 1920. This finely knotted Persian wool rug is woven in a palette of sapphire, pink, and cream, with pale blues and yellows. The rug features an elaborate floral and vase design, which includes a cartouche with an inscription in Farsi. The design begins with a large floral medallion over a sapphire field that is partly open, its outer edges, broken borders, and spandrels an exuberant riot of floral bouquets, vines, and boteh. Crisply rendered pictorial elements include clusters of grapes, petunias, morning glories, carnations, and vase forms. The rug has compound, broken borders in the field colors. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with fine wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
- there is some animal hair throughout; the reverse has small spot stains; there is one small stain on top; some fringe has sheared; the rug could benefit from professional cleaning.
135.0" W x 0.25" H x 210.5" D
- measurement includes the fringe; approximately 11.25’ W x 17.5’ D.
