Vintage Hand-Knotted Turkish Area Rug, Circa 1930
Item Details
An ornate vintage Turkish area rug, circa 1930. This large wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of rose, midnight blue, amber, and lavender. It begins with a very large, curvilinear star medallion with pendants at top and bottom. Resting on an open, rose-colored field, the medallion has a starburst in lavender atop an eight-point star, which, in turn, rests on a midnight blue star, both filled with florals, foliage, and vines, which continue in the spandrels. A pair of major borders, which are roughly equal in size, feature garden imagery; one contains tree of life motifs alternating with cypress trees over midnight blue, while the other features densely patterned floral and foliate arabesques over pale yellow. These borders are flanked by running water and floral guard strips. Selvedges are single overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short, natural wool warp fringe. The rug is unmarked.
