Gustave David Hand Colored Lithographs of Historic French Military Uniforms

A set of four early 20th-century hand-colored lithographs on paper by listed French artist Gustave David. Each depicts historic French military costumes during the reigns of Charles IX and Louis XV. Included is Infanterie Française (No. 44), made after a drawing by D. de Noirmont; the piece depicts soldiers’ uniforms from 1572. Also featured are three prints depicting the uniforms of military musicians, king’s guard members and French infantry soldiers from 1724-1772. These works include Dragons: Tambour et Hautbois (No. 151), Maison du Roi: Gendarmes de la Garde (No. 123) and Infanterie Française (No. 208); each was made after a drawing by Alfred de Marbot. The works were printed by Lemercier of Paris and published by Clément of Paris and E. Gambart, Junin & Co. of London. Each includes in-plate titles, labels and artist notations to the outer margins. The prints are presented under glass in wooden frames fitted with sawtooth hangers to the verso.
Condition
- foxing, discoloration and fading to prints with age; scratching and chipping to frames; small holes to right side of Dragons; one Infanterie Française print shows creases and wrinkles to right side.
