Antique Hand-Knotted Kurdish Area Rug
Item Details
An antique Kurdish area rug. This rectilinear wool rug is hand-knotted in an palette of madder red, indigo, and salmon. It features an unusual design incorporating a large, barber-pole striped lozenge with stepped edges on four sides. Edged in green, cornsilk, and camel, the lozenge rests on a red field, which is populated with florets, eyes, and other symbolic motifs. Framing the field is an indigo major border that contains stylized flowering plants in red and green, this border flanked by salmon guard borders with boteh in different colors. Some Abrash is present. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with ivory wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
