Hand-Knotted Persian Hamadan Area Rug
Item Details
A Persian Hamadan area rug. This rectilinear wool rug is hand-knotted in a bright palette of madder red, indigo, and sunflower yellow. It begins with an eight-point star medallion with a flower in each lobe. The medallion rests on a red field, which is densely populated with small boteh, and features a flower in each corner. The rug’s primary border contains a stylized floral pattern that includes enclosed cross shapes and other symbolic elements over an indigo ground. Flanking the primary border are meandering carnation guard strips. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short, knotted wool warp fringe. It is unmarked.
