Antique Handwoven Bijar Area Rug, Circa 1890

Item Details

An antique handwoven Bijar wool area rug, circa 1890. Bijar rugs are known as the ‘Iron Rugs’ of their region, so named for their durability. This unusual Persian rug is rendered in a palette of deep midnight blue, indigo, madder red, and camel with accents in green and deep mushroom brown. It features a stylized Mina Khani floral design with red vining elements and large palmettes over a midnight blue field. The major border contains a meandering floral pattern over indigo, while red guard borders contain abstracted meandering carnations over red. It has overcast selvedge with natural undyed wool warp fringe to each end. The rug is unmarked.
