Large Hand-Knotted Indo-Persian "Kashan" Area Rug

A hand-knotted Indo-Persian area rug. Made in India, this finely knotted wool rug is rendered in a palette of midnight blue, cochineal red, and cream. It features a classic Kashan-style floral design, which begins with a quatrefoil ivory shield enclosed in a red medallion with pendants at top and bottom. The medallion rests on a midnight blue field populated with floral and vine arabesques, with cream colored spandrels. Framing the field are ten guards strips and borders including a primary border that contains a stylized herati pattern over a red ground. Selvedges are overcast in blue, the rug finishing at either end with short kilim skirts and knotted wool warp fringe It is tagged on the reverse.
